Dog age calculator: dog years to human years

This dog age calculator estimates your dog's age in human years using both calendar age and adult body size. It reflects how quickly dogs mature early in life and why larger dogs generally age faster later on.

How dog age in human years is calculated

The first dog year equals about 15 human years and the second adds 9. After age two, each year adds 4 human years for small dogs, 5 for medium dogs, 6 for large dogs, or 7.5 for giant dogs. Additional months are included as fractions of a year, and the final estimate is rounded.

The 15- and 9-year starting points follow the general veterinary guideline. The 4, 5, 6, and 7.5 size adjustments are this calculator's approximation of the documented pattern that larger dogs age faster and have shorter average lifespans. They are not a clinical standard or a measurement of biological age.

Why one dog year is not seven human years

Puppies reach adolescence and adulthood far faster than people, so a simple ×7 rule understates early development. Aging also varies by adult size, especially after the first two years.

Which size should I choose?

Use your dog's expected adult weight, not a growing puppy's current weight. For mixed breeds, select the closest adult weight range. The result also shows a general puppy, adult, or senior life stage based on size.

Is this a biological age test?

No. Breed, genetics, health, nutrition, and activity all affect aging. This puppy age calculator and dog years calculator provides a general comparison only; a veterinarian can assess your dog's individual health and care needs.

Frequently asked questions

Is one dog year equal to seven human years?

No. Dogs mature much faster during their first two years, and their later aging rate varies with adult size. The ×7 rule misses both differences.

Why does adult size affect the result?

Smaller dogs generally have longer lifespans and tend to age more slowly in later life than large and giant dogs. Choose expected adult weight when calculating the age of a puppy.

When is a dog considered a senior?

This calculator uses approximate senior-age thresholds by adult size: 8.5 years for small dogs, 7.5 for medium dogs, 7 for large dogs, and 6 for giant dogs. Individual dogs may reach this stage at different ages.

What if I do not know my dog's exact age?

Use the best estimate from adoption or veterinary records. A veterinarian can assess teeth, eyes, coat, muscle condition, and behavior to estimate an age range, but may not be able to identify an exact birthday.
